What Does Book Marketing Actually Cost? A Realistic Guide for Authors
28 July 2026

Book marketing pricing is famously opaque, which is exactly how bad actors keep it. So let's be direct about what things cost, what they should cost, and where your money actually earns its keep.
The foundations (spend here first)
- Developmental editing: typically $0.02–$0.05 per word.
- Copy and line editing: typically $0.015–$0.03 per word.
- Proofreading: typically $0.008–$0.015 per word.
- Professional cover design: roughly $400–$1,500 for a custom cover.
- Book description and metadata copywriting: roughly $150–$500.
None of this is marketing, and all of it determines whether marketing works. A great campaign on a weak product is the fastest way to lose money in publishing.
Advertising
Amazon, Meta and BookBub ads are the most common paid channels. Realistic starting budgets sit between $10 and $50 per day during a testing phase, scaling only once the numbers justify it. Management, if you outsource it, usually runs a flat monthly fee or a percentage of spend.
The metric that matters is not clicks. It's whether a dollar in produces more than a dollar out across the whole series, including page reads and follow-on sales.
Publicity and media outreach
Traditional publicity campaigns are typically sold in one to three month blocks and range widely depending on the level of access and the number of targeted placements. What you're buying is relationships, pitch craft and timing, not guarantees, and any firm promising guaranteed coverage should be treated with suspicion.
Launch support
- Advance reader team building and management.
- Retail metadata, categories and keyword strategy.
- Pre-order and launch-week sequencing.
- Review generation and follow-up.
Author platform
An author website, email list setup, media kit and branded social templates are one-time or low-recurring costs that keep working for years. Of everything on this page, platform tends to have the longest payback period and the highest lifetime return.
Three realistic budget levels
Lean
Put everything into editing, cover, description and a small, tightly targeted ad test. Do your own outreach. Slow, but sustainable.
Standard
Foundations plus managed advertising and a structured launch. This is where most independent authors see their first genuinely profitable release.
Full campaign
Foundations, managed ads, publicity, video trailer, platform build and post-launch momentum work. Appropriate when there's a backlist or a series to amplify.
How to decide what to spend
- Never spend on promotion what should have been spent on product.
- Budget against the lifetime value of the series, not the single title.
- Test small, scale only what's measurable.
- Treat platform as an asset, not an expense.
At Helitesmedia we'd rather tell an author to spend less and spend it correctly than sell a package that can't earn its cost back. If you'd like a plan sized to your actual budget, that's exactly what our free marketing plan is for.
Smart investments. Stronger results. Spend where the return compounds.
